RUE: This evergreen herb has leaves that bring forth an essential oil, and yellow flowers that bloom in late summer. It has long been a symbol of sorrow and repentance, and is therefore also called Herb-Of-Grace. An ointment of the oil will ease gout and the rheumatics, while an infusion of the leaves will drive out worms and cure ailments of the stomach. Yet rue is a bitter herb and a poison and will bring sickness and fearsome visions if ill used. The ancients have writ that weasels eat rue as proof against snakebite, and craftsmen partake of it to make their sight keen. Sprigs of me have been used for the casting out of demons, and strewn in courts of law to keep out vermin.
